In the afternoon in December 28, in Vi Thanh commune, the Ministry of Industry and Trade approved the plan of constructing Hau River Power Center submitted by Hau Giang province’s People Committee. This center which is located in Phu Huu A industrial group, Chau Thanh district with an area of 360 ha has an estimated capacity of 5,200 MW with 3 power plants.

To date, the construction of the main dam of Buon Kuop hydropower project has been basically completed, in which the job of damming up has been 99.4% finished and has reached the height for flood prevention. However, there has been still 8,300 m3 of rock and soil remaining. The main cause is the continuously heavy rain. At present, contractors are making use of the weather condition to complete the job of damming up in October 2008.

As revealed by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, in order to meet the demand of the socio-economic development in the Priority Economic Zone in the Central, including the aim to reach the industrial GDP growth rate of 13.5% in 2006 – 2010 period and 12.5% in 2011 – 2015 period, the power growth rate is estimated to achieve 22% and 17.3%, respectively.

As said by The Electricity of Vietnam (EVN), from now to the end of 2008, EVN needs VND 11,856 billion of commercial credit capital and bonds for projects on power generations and networks, of which the domestic commercial credit capital is VND 6,747 billion, foreign loan is VND 1,109 billion and bond capital is VND 4,000 billion.

According to the Power Plan VI and the plan to develop power plants in provinces in the Northern Centered Economic Zone, from now to 2015, there will be 10 – 12 thermal power companies constructed with the increase in total capacity of 6,300 - 7,000 MW. After 2015, there will be one or two thermopower plants with the capacity of 600 – 1,200 MW constructed, which will satisfy the power demand in the region.
